Overview
The Opioid Early Career Scholar Program (ECSP) is an in-person immersive program that offers clinicians and students the opportunity to interact with a panel of expert faculty and discuss the 2022 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, changes made since the last Guideline published in 2016, and ways to utilize the new Guideline in the management of pain. Emphasis will be on the need to individualize treatment to the needs of the patient, use of multi-modal pain management strategies, understanding the different pain pathways and biopsychosocial factors individual patients face trying to manage pain. Activities will be designed to meet the requirements as CME for MIPS Improvement Activities and is eligible as part of the MATE program.

Activity Description
This 1.5-day in-person immersion program on clinical aspects of pain management and OUD will focus on applications of the FDA Blueprint into practice, and intensification strategies and therapies in the management of pain and OUD. The Opioid ECSP offers attendees the opportunity to interact with nationally recognized pain management experts in both didactic and small-group settings. This course is also eligible as part of the MATE program.

One of the most challenging things to do as a clinician is to talk to a patient with whom you disagree, whether it's about a diagnosis or a treatment plan. In this CME program, you'll learn strategies of how to talk to and manage patients with complex pain and opioid histories, and how to respectfully agree to disagree.

Dr. Kimberlee Bayless is a Nurse Practitioner and the Director of the Transitional Pain Service at the Department at George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also the Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology University of Utah School of Medicine. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Utah, where she subsequently received her Master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Kimberlee is board certified by the American Board of Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Dr. Bayless has practiced pain medicine for numerous years in the private practice setting and has been a nurse for over 22 years in the private, hospital, and academic setting. She is currently serving as the co-chair for the Utah Nurse Practitioner Pharmacology Conference and on the legislative committee for the Utah Nurse Practitioner Association. She is the chair of office of nursing service the pain management APRN special interest group. She is a member of office of nursing service pain management field advisory committee. Dr. Bayless serves as the Vice-Chair of the NP/PA/RN special interest group for the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. Additionally, she is the 2019 Secretary’s Ward Excellence in Nursing recipient for the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners 2022 Utah State Award for Excellence.

Melissa J. Durham, PharmD, MACM is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and an Associate Dean at the University of Southern California (USC) Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree, completed a residency in Community-based Pharmacy Practice, and has a Master of Academic Medicine degree, all from USC. Dr. Durham is a clinical pharmacist at the USC Pain Center, where since 2008 she has run a pharmacist-led pain medication management service for patients with a variety of complicated chronic nononcologic pain conditions. She is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with chronic pain through patient-centered and compassionate care. The value of her unique practice model has been recognized and published both nationally and internationally. Dr. Durham is also a practicing community pharmacist and provides a valuable and unique perspective of a clinician who is both a prescriber and a dispenser.

Jeffrey Gudin, MD completed his residency in anesthesiology at the Yale University School of Medicine and his fellowship at the Yale Center for Pain Management. While in New Haven, Dr. Gudin also trained in addiction medicine and directed a substance abuse treatment center. As Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, he remains active in teaching and research. Dr. Gudin has assisted in clinical trial design and the development of numerous analgesics. He has lectured internationally on pain management, palliative care, and addiction medicine, and has served as expert witness on a variety of patent, medical opioid-related, and injury cases.
Dr. Gudin is principal investigator on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded analgesic research project through the Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) Initiative, by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) to study the pharmacology and safety of a novel molecule/ formulation for the treatment of pain.
Dr. Gudin has dedicated his career to promoting education in pain management. He attends and has presented at PAINWeek, the American Pain Society, American Academy of Pain Management, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and many other national/ international venues.

Sudheer Potru, DO, FASA, FASAM is a triple-board-certified anesthesiologist, pain medicine physician, and addiction medicine specialist at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, where he serves as the director for the facility's complex pain management clinic. A former Associate Professor, his primary clinical and research interests are in the intersection of opioid safety, substance use disorders, and the perioperative and pain clinic settings. He has published extensively in these domains and serves on national committees for ASA, ASRA Pain Medicine, and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. He has lectured nationally and internationally at numerous anesthesiology and pain management conferences and has given grand rounds presentations at such reputed institutions as the Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt, and many others. A graduate of Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Potru completed his residency training in anesthesiology at the University of Miami/Jackson Health System in Florida and a pain medicine fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
