Obesity is transforming the landscape of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), shaping disease activity, treatment response, and long-term prognosis. As evidence reveals the impact of excess weight on biologic and JAK inhibitor effectiveness, emerging anti-obesity therapies, including GLP-1 receptor agonists, are creating new opportunities to improve patient outcomes. To stay ahead of this rapidly evolving field, gastroenterologists and multidisciplinary care teams need timely, evidence-based education to confidently integrate obesity management into personalized, stigma-free IBD care.

In this CME Outfitters livestream symposium, expert faculty will identify the immunometabolic mechanisms by which visceral and mesenteric adipose tissue contribute to IBD disease activity, therapeutic attenuation, and surgical risk in people with IBD and obesity. Learners will be shown how to apply appropriate, validated methods to systematically identify and characterize adiposity in people with IBD during routine gastroenterology encounters, including recognition of peoples at highest risk based on adiposity distribution. Faculty will model development of an individualized treatment plan for a patient with IBD and obesity that integrates weight management strategies and addresses the safety and appropriate use of GLP-1 RAs in this population.
